Hanyu Sun, PhD, is an Associate Vice President for Statistics and Data Science with more than 15 years of experience in survey methodology. She specializes in the design of multimode data collection, questionnaire design and pretesting, data analysis and visualization, and reporting of results. She has a strong statistical background with advanced data analytic skills.
Sun has contributed her technical expertise to methodological studies for various federal and non-federal agencies. For AHRQ’s Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), she leads the development and design of the machine learning (ML) audio pipeline and WesCARI process and metrics to address MEPS-specific needs to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of monitoring interviewer performance and assessing survey questions. For the USDA’s FNS’s WIC HOPE Study, she leads the development of questions, including cognitive interviewing, to collect longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample of mother-child dyads. For the NCI’s Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 7, she leads the design and analysis of the commitment statement experiment, which aims to improve response rates and enhance data quality. For the BJS’s National Inmate Survey of Jails (NIS-4), she led the review, revision, and development of data quality flags and the development of derived variables. In addition, Sun is the product manager of WesCARI. She provided methodological guidance on designing and developing key features, such as Rapid Feedback and Question Assessment, to address project-specific needs.
Sun has published research in various journals, such as the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology (JSSAM), Social Science Computer Review, Public Opinion Quarterly, Field Methods, and Survey Practice, along with technical reports. She has served as a committee member for professional organizations, including the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the Survey Research Methods Section of the American Statistical Association (ASA). She is currently serving as Associate Editor for the JSSAM.
